I decided I needed more summer shorty socks and that I also needed to use up some of my Tofutsies sock yarn stash. I went looking through Barbara Walker’s Treasury of Knitting Pattern for something to jazz up my usual shorty formula. I decided that Little Butterfly or Bow knot Stitch (p. 101) would work great as a 2 color pattern.
The pattern is much easier to work in the round than flat, no reaching from the back side to the front to snag those loose strands.
Using black, I did a crochet chain provisional cast on of 32 stitches, for 64 total. I did a short row toe with 16 unworked stitches in the center, as I have broad toes. I work with the yarn on 3 needles and knit off with a 4th.
I joined the yellow and distributed the stitches 19/26/19 and added one stitch to the center of the middle (instep) needle for the pattern. The pattern is a 10 stitch 12 row repeat, I planned for 2 1/2 repeats on the instep = 25 + 2 edge stitches.
I did 6 1/2 pattern row repeats before starting the short row heel on the 2 needles holding 19 stitches each. This was approximately 6 3/4” from the tip of the toe.
Using black, I worked a short row heel and decreased to 14 center unworked stitches-- 12 decreases each side. My heels are slightly more narrow than my toes. This also gave me good heel depth as I have a high arch. After increasing back to my original number of stitches, I added 5 stitches for a total of 70 stitches. (64+1+5=70) I moved the 2 edge stitches to the 2 heel needles, so the distribution of stitches was 25, 25, 20.
I joined the yellow and did one pattern repeat on all needles.
Then using just yellow, I knit 15 rounds and bound off using a #4US needle.
Using black, I counted 5 row from the start of the solid yellow and picked up 70 stitches from the purl bumps. Knit 15 rounds and bound off with #4 needle
With the yellow, I counted up 5 rows from where I had joined the black and picked up 70 stitches from the purl bumps. Knit 15 rounds and bound off with #4 needle.
I wear a U.S. size 8 1/2 wide shoe. My feet measure 9 1/2” in circumference around the widest part & 9 1/2” long.
Total yarn usage: black 39 grams & yellow 27 grams.
A quick and easy knit. It always seems that a sock with an interesting pattern goes faster than plain vanilla stocking stitch.
