I’ve gotten a lot of questions about how I made these letters.
I looked for a Red Sox font, but wasn’t happy with what I found, so I studied the Red Sox lettering on official Red Sox gear. I used the “N” in “BOSTON” to design the “M”, the “T” to design the “J” and the “O” and “S” to design the “G”.
After designing the letters, I figured out what size the letters should be by holding large pieces of paper against the blankets. I folded and re-folded until I got the right size. Most of the letters were approximately 1/4 the size of each blanket.
I cut out the square or rectangle, drew the design on, then cut the letters. That was a mistake because the paper I used was too flimsy. My first attempt at a “J” didn’t come out well so I went back to the drawing board. This time I didn’t cut out the letter and it was a lot easier to work with. I crocheted freehand and would hold up the letters to my templates as I worked. If it wasn’t the right shape, I would rip it back and try again.
When the letters were finished, I did a white border of mostly single crochet (with some slip stitches), then very carefully sewed it to the blanket through the back loops of the border. Because the “M” was so thick, I tacked it in a few additional spots.
I added hearts to each blanket to represent each member of their family. I wanted to show them all together even though the family was physically separated by Marc’s hospitalization. See also my heart notes.
