June 10:
I think I’ve got it. It’s still too much hair for a real steampunk look, but she has this pinhead that I have to compensate for, and I like the messiness of this version. I sprayed it with silver metallic spray paint from about eighteen inches away to act as a hair spray without making it a metal cap. I may hit it again later, although I’m getting to the point where I can’t keep spray painting things without hitting things I don’t want painted.

June 9:
I am spending more time on this hair then I ever did on my own hair. First hair-do was too far forward. Second one was too neat and smooth. The one I’m working on now is better, I think, but I may just be tired of doing yarn hair. Big lesson learned: messy is better, more steampunky and fun to look at.

June 8:
Jane needs a lot of hair because her head is too small in proportion to her body. The massive hairdo will fix this perception from a distance. If her head had been in better proportion, two strands per knot would have been plenty. I had planned to do a hat, but then I realized that Jane is a writing automaton, so she wouldn’t be dressed to go out. I think the most I’m going to add might be some flowers or ribbons, but again, she’s a working girl, so not too many

Making the wig:

Skullcap:
Ch 5 and join as a circle.
Row 1: Ch 4 (stands in for a dc/ch 1), them dc/ch1 eleven times into the circle. Slip stitch to third ch of beginning ch. (12 dc and 12 ch 1 spaces)
Row 2: Ch 4 (stands in for a dc/ch 1), then dc/ch1 in the every dc and every ch 1 space around. Slip stitch to third ch of beginning ch. (24 dc and 24 ch 1 spaces)
Row 3 through 7: Ch 4 (stands in for a dc/ch 1), them dc/ch1 into each dc around. Slip stitch to third ch of beginning ch. (24 dc and 24 ch 1 spaces)
Row 8 (back of neck): Ch 4 (stands in for a dc/ch 1), then dc/ch1 into next 6 dc, dc in last dc. (8 dc and 7 ch1 spaces)
Row 9 (back of neck): Turn, ch 4 (stands in for a dc/ch 1), then dc/ch1 into next 6 dc, dc in last dc. (8 dc and 7 ch1 spaces).

Basic Hair:
Wrap yarn around a notebook lengthwise (about 12”). Cut at bottom and loop three strands at a time through the mesh of the skull cap using a rya knot. (Save yarn and cut down on the volume of the hair by using two strands.) Fold half a dozen pieces in thirds and loop through front mesh over forehead for bangs.

Glue the skull cap to the head, being careful to keep the ends of the hair free. You take it from there.
