Our eighth issue introduces makers in the towns of Colorado’s Front Range. We visit the Schacht Spindle Company’s factory to learn how looms and spinning wheels are built, the crafters’ mecca of Fancy Tiger Crafts, and the warm and welcoming My Sister Knits. We taste test barrel-aged beers at Jessup Farm Barrel House, and enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek at yarn dyeing by Six and Seven Fibers and Sunshine Yarns. We marvel at the beautiful form and function of stitching, quilting, and weaving in the studios of Carol Ann Waugh, Valerie White, and David Johnson. And we are immersed in Hue Loco’s dyeing techniques that produce its vibrant yarns and saturated colors. We chat about how makers build community with the founders of Knit for Fun and The Makerie retreats, and we sample Mona Botanical’s botanically infused oils. As we travel, we take time to hike at Boulder’s Flat Irons, drive the Peak-to-Peak Byway up to the snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountain National Park, and marvel at the golden aspens that frame the Poudre la Cache River Canyon. The vistas of Colorado pique the imagination and inspire the soul with their dramatic landscapes and natural beauty, and that inspiration and beauty is reflected in artistry of its makers.

In Issue #9 of By Hand Serial, we travel the length and breadth of Nova Scotia, exploring the great variety that it offers. We begin our travels in the urban center of Halifax, then travel to the wineries and family farms of the Annapolis Valley, hike the wild trails of Cape Breton Island, and marvel at the stunningly beautiful seascapes and historic villages of the South Shore. Along the way, we explore Nova Scotia’s history and tradition of rug hooking, meet quilters who blend traditional techniques with modern variations to create art and pictorial quilts, and talk with an artist who fashions delicate jewelry from sea glass found on Nova Scotia’s many beaches, We wander through a maritime yarn store and a fabric store rich with color and texture. We chat with yarn dyers who create unique, one-of-a-kind fibers and hues. One of our most fascinating days is spent with TapRoot Fibre, learning about how flax is grown, harvested, processed, spun, and woven to create linen fabric. We learn about the lost history of linen production in Nova Scotia, and how TapRoot Fibre is experimenting and innovating to bring the crop back in a modern, sustainable way. Nova Scotia is a province of great variety, overwhelming beauty, friendly locals, and monumental adventure.
