We used to have an amazing garden that my mom took care of. Flowers always remind me of her. So naturally when I couldn’t find the right name for this pattern, I called my mom. And after long discussion we named pattern Crocus.

How could we greet spring and warm weather without beautiful butterflies? I sure can’t. 

The last weekend of February I spent in Finland with my partner. I knew I will have some time alone, so I took some beautiful yarn with me. I had no clear vision or plan before starting, everything just came together while knitting.

Last year I knitted shawl for Estonia’s 100th birthday, it had more than 6500 nupps. That shawl was meant as a gift for my country and it is at Estonian National Museum. This pattern is dedicated to cat, that I had an honor to rescue. He was extremely skinny, blind and deaf. Unfortunately he had only three weeks left in him, we were just too late with saving him. He was first one that I rescued from the streets (actually from a busy road), my other cats spent some time in shelter first.

I waited more than 10 months to knit this pattern. I love a lot of nupps and flowers, perfect pattern for me. 

I was knitting this pattern while I had a challenge to work on my courage. I was more open to complimenting and meeting new people. My courage still needs some work, but I was very proud of progress I made in a month. So this shawl symbolizes courage for me.

I’ve had this gorgeous yarn since 2011, when I bought it from Lõngastuudio. Yarn was hand-dyed by my first lace knitting idol - Liina Langi. And so yarn waited for it’s right time.

It was huge pleasure knitting this pattern. There are only 1403 nupps, but nice handful of nupps are 21-ply. About five years ago I wouldn’t have knitted pattern with so much stockinette. Very detailed center makes knitting so interesting, that it’s good to have some rows for resting.

I really loved the name my knitter suggested. I couldn’t find a good translation to English, so I decided to keep the name as is.

I was looking for baby alpaca yarn in my stash and stumbled upon beautiful hand dyed yarn from Dream in Color. It seemed as a great fit for pattern with birds.

Main motif of this shawl was designed by my friend some time back. I like to experiment by giving paper and pen to a guy and see what they can come up with. Loved this motif, so added some more birds and came up with this pattern.

We sat together in front of the TV, with her embroidering and me knitting. Little did we know it would be our last time together.
