Knitting: Beanie, Toque
With winter settling in, we can all use a quick, cozy hat. This one uses a DK-weight yarn and a super stretchy 3x3 rib.

The Icelandic word “gluggaveður” (literally “window weather”) refers to the kind of clear winter day that’s beautiful to look at, but best enjoyed from somewhere cozy. While we’re all enjoying many more days from inside, this cowl provides the coziness. It uses double knit and brioche to make a thick, reversible fabric. Vertical and horizontal ...

The simple, striking Crown Prince lace pattern, an Estonian classic, is accented by pops of color from a contrasting lining. Two layers of luxurious superfine merino make this cowl supremely cozy.

Using only one color per row and nothing more complicated than knitting, purling, and slipping stitches, Verticordia creates a reversible ribbed fabric with stripes on one side and herringbone on the other.

Disconformity is the big, cozy blanket I’ve wanted through the typically inconsistent Michigan spring. It works up remarkably quickly in heavy yarn, with the textural chevron and colored stripes providing interest both to the finished object and the knitting experience.

This is the project to make with that beautiful skein you’ve been hoarding. It’s a quick and easy knit with enough variation to stay interesting, and the windowpane patterns on either side literally frame your lovely yarn.

Catoptrics concerns the properties of optical systems containing mirrors, where beams of light bounce like the lines of eyelets in this asymmetric triangle shawl.

The centerpiece lace panel is surrounded by ribbing, which gives this shawl a great drape.

I originally thought this was a blanket, but I was quickly corrected by the many people who wanted to wear it as a wrap or poncho. It uses the classic eye-of-partridge pattern for a subtle texture and extra-cozy thickness. An added bonus: all those slipped stitches make for a surprisingly quick knit.

This cowl is a great way to use a single skein of chunky luxury yarn. The spiral pattern uses the principles of sequence knitting, so there’s no keeping track of rows or repeats…or, in fact, anything but the last three stitches you worked. Dryocampa rubicunda, the rosy maple moth, is known for its bright color and endearing fluffiness. This shawl, whose five-panelled shape is inspired by the moth’s outstretched wings, is equally inviting. It drapes especially gracefully and securely because of the beads running through it.
