Some of my favorite fall comforts are baked desserts that come together quickly but taste divine -- the kind of treats that are best enjoyed cozied in the living room on chilly nights. Blackberry Buckle takes its inspiration from those desserts, both in name and in it’s comfortable shape.

Growing up on the Connecticut coast, I spent many summer days and evenings roaming the town beach, collecting seashells and dragging red-brown and green seaweed in from the surf. Tangleweed is inspired by those childhood seaweed harvests. The hat’s ribbed pattern reminds me of ribbons of sugar kelp and the kelp bulbs that washed up in clumps be...

Growing up, one of my favorite holiday traditions was making new ornaments for the family Christmas tree. While I glued my fair share of macaroni to metallic cardboard disks and twisted pipe cleaners into snowflakes, my favorite homemade ornaments were (and still are) the ones fashioned from paper strips. The stitch pattern featured on Tinsel T...

A little rustic, just a bit girly, extremely cozy and easy to wear - in my mind, this describes the quintessential autumn sweater. Saltaire hits all of the marks with its not-too-fussy lace back, deep ribbed shawl collar, and patch pockets. It’s a cardigan to wear for rainy day hikes and puddle jumping, tea parties and library outings.

Sweetbriar Surplice is the second pattern in the Everyday Dresses Ebook. The book is available now for $10.00, until the publication of the final dress (Salt Island), when it will reach the final $12.00 price

Berry Season is a darling cardigan for girls. Knit from the bottom up starting with a tubular cast-on and deep ribbing, the cardigan features a twin leaf lace motif down the center back and on either side of the button band. Faux side seams add just a touch of structure.

A thin line of trees divided my elementary school playground from Wren Park, where an unkempt baseball diamond promised unruly games of kickball and tag, and almost nonexistent adult supervision. At recess, circling the school playground, we hatched schemes to escape to Wren Park for the afternoon, where we would shirk math class and reading gr...

Like most small children, my daughter has a tendency to collect little treasures during our walks. Even in the winter, when there are no dandelions to pick or inchworms to scoop up, she manages to find plenty to fill her pockets – birds’ feathers, leaves with interesting shapes, and small pebbles that somehow stand out from the rest.

When I was little, my mother kept a generous supply of confections stashed away in a kitchen cabinet. During the winter holidays, we would push aside the spice jars stacked at the cabinet’s front and unearth sugar crystals of every color, chocolate and rainbow sprinkles, and multi-colored nonpareils, which we would shake out over sugar cookie s...

The weekend after Thanksgiving, my community celebrates the start of the winter season by lighting the ancient spruce tree in the center of my neighborhood. All through December, and deep into January, the tree illuminates at dusk. It’s the first thing we see in the evening when we round the corner toward our house; the colorful lights signal t...

At less than 50 miles long the Quinnipiac River is small, and passing over it on the “Q” bridge in New Haven, Connecticut, it doesn’t look like much. But a few miles upstream, where the urban landscape thins and trees crowd the banks, it’s easy to see why this river is special. The calm waters and wooded terrain are the perfect backdrop for lei...

I grew up in rural New England, where the orchards are plentiful and apple picking is a family tradition. Most years, as summer turned into fall, my family would drive out to one of the area orchards and fill baskets with apples – golden delicious, granny smiths, cortlands, and macouns. It’s a ritual I now miss, and it’s one my grandfather miss...

I’ve always had a thing for vintage candies. Growing up, candy buttons were one of my favorites. I loved peeling the brightly colored sugar dots from their paper strip and popping them, one at a time, into my mouth. The pops of color that dot the yoke of this dress are as sweet as the candy buttons I loved as a child.

Summer doesn’t have to mean the end of sweater weather; at least not when the sweater in question is as sweet as Lenny. With its short sleeves, slightly looser gauge, and bold lace panel, Lenny is perfect for breezy beach days and after-dinner ice cream outings. Named after Lenny and Joe’s, the coastal Connecticut fish house where I learned to ...
Knitting: Sleeveless Top
Named after a beautiful state park in Virginia’s Northern Neck, Belle Isle is a perfectly girly sleeveless top. Just like the park, with its sun-dappled woodlands and riverside views, it’s just right for warm summer days. The easy-fitting skirt gathers at the back waist before a fitted yoke adorned with Eiffel Tower Eyelet.

Just like it’s big sister, Cedar Lake Baby is a classic raglan cardigan dressed up with not-too-girly lace panels. Worked at a finer gauge than the big kid version, Cedar Lake Baby is a perfect layering sweater - just warm enough to keep away the chill on brisk spring days and cool summer evenings
Knitting: Sleeveless Top
This breezy tunic is perfect for springtime weather, and worked up in worsted weight wool, it’s nearly instant knitting gratification. Pattaconk features a sideways constructed yoke in squooshy garter stitch with short-row shaped cap sleeves and an A-line skirt with an off-center leaf lace inset.

With its classic silhouette and modern geometric lace motif, Cedar Lake is an everyday wearable cardigan. Paired with jeans and a comfy shirt, it’s perfect for exploring lakefront beaches and wooded trails. Over a dress, it’s lovely for special outings and weekend trips to the city.
