Gairloch Museum
Gairloch Museum
I am curator of Gairloch Museum in the North West Highlands of Scotland. In 2020, our small, independent museum was announced Winner of Art Fund Museum of the Year! We are located in a nuclear bunker and have the best view in Scotland down Loch Gairloch to the Isle of Skye.
Amongst other things, we are famous for our Gairloch Pattern knitting, many items of which feature in the collection. The pattern originated at the time of the Great Highland famine in the 1840s. Women started exchanging their knitting for food to support their families through the destitution years.
