My earliest maker memories… sometime around the age of 7 or 8, I made thumbprint spider Christmas wrapping paper and calligraphy name cards for Thanksgiving. Oh…and I made a ton of those loom pot holders. And billions of those embroidery floss friendship bracelets.

It was not until my early twenties that I picked up the needles and hooks again {like so so many} and have been knitting ever since. Today, when I’m not designing patterns or making things for my Haberdashery Shop on Etsy, you can find me hiking… camera in hand.

Finding inspiration in culture is inevitable when you are an artist endeavoring in design and the creative process. And, as you can imagine, the opinions on what is appropriate and what is not appropriate, vary greatly. I am mindful when naming patterns (not using bigoted names) nor images/references that perpetuate negative stereotypes. I am committed to always acknowledging the origin of designs rooted in culture. I will also not adopt or depict sacred artifacts in my designs… Of equal importance, I will not reproduce any textile created by an indigenous culture and claim it as my own.

My design goal is to create designs, rich in texture, utilizing textures through knitting techniques (like mosaic knitting) while exploring color.

Each pattern tells a story… the colors I chose in my sample represent me. The beauty that comes out in your design will represent you… cross cultural expression.
