Heidi Hizsa
Hi! I’m Heidi, I’m vegan for the animals and I identify as queer. I learned to knit when I was seven from a lovely lady I met while sailing with my family in the South Pacific. Just the basics, but it stuck with me, and being a crafty person, I never went long without having something on the needles, even though I didn’t get beyond knit and purl for about ten years. Then along came a knitter friend, and shortly after, Ravelry, and that was that. I’m more of a seat-of-your-pants type knitter. I don’t always read the pattern ahead of time, and if I don’t like something about it, I change it. I love the process of knitting, and seeing something appear out of a single strand of yarn makes me giddy. I have a background in costuming. I apprenticed for a year at Vancouver Playhouse, volunteered with Bard on the Beach and the Arts Club and then I finally went to Capilano University for it, then decided I wanted to do something else for a while (theatre was great, school was not). I had a fling with bicycles for a few years when I worked in a few bike shops, before entering back into the theatre & film world as a Set Decoration Seamster.
In the spring of 2013 I quit my day job to take on Vegan Yarn full time. Now I dye yarn, enjoy powerlifting, volunteer in cycling advocacy, learn Japanese, play violin and piano, and I’m vegan for always. Oh, I also recently took up another side business growing rare tropical plants because why not another hobby right? I work freelance in theatre and film from time to time, mostly doing really weird custom knitting jobs, or teaching B-list celebrities how to knit, but most of the time I’m steadily working away at building my Vegan Yarn dream.
I have a fan club for my yarn here on ravelry. Its fun for sharing projects that we’ve made with Vegan Yarn, to get the latest news on what yarns are coming up, make requests for new colourways, and see where I’ll be travelling with my yarn next.
My dreams for the future involve exploring, hiking, competing in powerlifting, and fantasy LARPing (look it up, it’s awesome) with my lovely son and amazing husband, knit, design, and dye tons and tons of yarn.
