The filling of the Christmas stocking is a memorable holiday tradition. The legend goes that St. Nicholas knew of a recently widowed nobleman who had fallen on hard times. Such bad luck had overtaken him that in trying to provide for his estate workers and his family, he became penniless. This man and his three daughters had moved to a small cottage where the daughters learned to take care of all the tasks performed by servants. They never complained and remained cheerful in spite of their changed fortunes. The daughters were of marriageable age and with suitors whose families would not allow the marriages without proper dowries. Knowing of their good deeds and dire circumstances, yet great pride, St. Nicholas was at a loss to find a way to help them. Then, one Christmas Eve he passed a window and saw the stockings of the three daughters drying by the fire. He tossed a small bag of gold into each of them, enough to provide for dowries and change their lives. Thus, it is said, the tradition of filling stockings with gifts began. The gold is even now represented by oranges, small coins, or bags of chocolate discs covered with gold foil.
Some knit and crochet items have a special attraction and are always requested as gifts. Many of us have a store of them in reserve so we can meet requests as they come. As a member of 50+ Knitting/Crochet, if you have any such patterns, please add them to this bundle.
An * indicates that you have made the item. No star indicates you have seen it made and wish you had one, or it just seems like a great idea for a gift.
Note: To bundle a pattern type its name in the Bundle a pattern box. Make sure the pattern you choose is the correct one or delete it and try again.
