I learned how to knit at 8 in primary school. Back then I wasn’t head over heels about knitting as I never understood why my scarf would narrow as I knitted, but I also never questioned it. I made a few scarves with many irregularities, used knits and purls and unknowingly yarnovers or knits one below. Fast forward, when I wrote my thesis in 2010 I rediscovered knitting. Again, I would start with a scarf without really knowing anything about gauging, which yarn weight goes with which needle size, not to mention the pattern. I just picked up any yarn, paired it with any needle size and let my hands and brain dance. I finished this scarf in no time (as opposed to my thesis) and didn’t even realise that there were no surprise-yarnovers or knits below.
After my studies, I started a small jewelry business in Vienna. I worked together with local designers and sold my jewelry in local concept stores. This exciting, very fun time was interrupted when my partner and I decided to move to Brussels. I was pregnant with our first baby and took the decision to put my journey with creating jewelry on hold. The tiny parts, the sharp tools, all the equipment wouldn’t be a safe environment for a baby.
And so I needed to find another way to express myself: I went back to the craft that accompanied me since childhood - knitting. Only now, I had the greatest inspiration I could wish for, my baby! Like many beginners, I started with free patterns and as I evolved, purchased them from talented fellow knitting designers. As I have always been a creator, I tried to write down some patterns myself. I learned how to appreciate the different types and quality of yarns, the difference between working with wooden or metal needles, the magic behind all the maths as a tool to transform your idea into an actual knitted piece. Man, I was the worst math student! But now, that I have figured it out (at least the part that I need for creating), I will keep designing and spreading my ideas, sharing my knitting skills and supporting fellow knitters.
