My first project 19 years ago was a cabled sweater! The gracious lady (Helen McElwreath from Helen’s Yarns and Things, Ardmore OK) at the local yarn shop taught me how to knit. I used a grey tweed and wanted a sweater as a first project. She told me, “Of course I could do a sweater, they were easy!” She used a basic sweater pattern and we calculated it to my measurements. When I was halfway up the back I asked if I could put cables on the front, and again she said, “Of course I could do cables. They were easy!” I believed her, so I picked out a honeycomb cable out of a Barbara Walker Treasury and got started.
I am greatful to Helen for the way she taught me to knit. She showed me how to calculate gauge, how to alter a basic sweater pattern (add cables, change stitch count for gauge, etc) so that I pretty much alter every pattern I come across in some way or another. I want to take that next step and learn to design from scratch.
I love knitting in the round and try to convert patterns to the round or just make them up using the EPS system. So far so good.
