The 123 Look Book is a quiet book for babies/toddlers with one number on each page, both written and pictured. I have made mine bright and colourful, but this is of course only a suggestion.

I reccomend using 100% cotton yarn as it is mashine washable, sturdy and does not shed fibres to the same degree as other fibres. What hook size you choose depends on what your yarn recommends. Achieving gauge is not very important as long as you keep your stitches even.
