1399 Fingerless mittens
A basic pattern of fingerless mitts. It can easily be adjusted as you se fit, with longer cuff, or make the brim longer.
The pattern came about as a knitting-bingo square and a desire to knit something to do with the Chronicles of St. Marys. Which is very hard as the books don’t really discuss yarn, sheep or mittens.
But in order to get everything as historically correct as possible, I started digging through online records, reading british sheep breed books to find out what sheep would have been present in 1399 (or there about). Then I had to figure out wether is was possible to get yarn that would be as historically correct as possible.
The closest sheep would be the Norfolk, a predecessor to the Norfolk Horn. Luckily there is a lady, Jenn Monohan who has a small scale production of Norfolk horn yarn.
So if you want sort of historically correct yarn, one skein of her DK will do. If not, use whatever DK yarn you prefer :)
