16 Leaf Motif for Afghan
This motif was inspired by a pattern in Hewitt and Daley’s 1990 book “Motifs, Borders and Trims…“.
16 small puffy leaves are in a diamond formation on a reverse stockinette stitch background. A garter stitch background outside the diamond is used to fill out the triangle motif.
Traditionally, these motifs were sewn into a bedspread/counterpane with a knitted edging around the finished project. Today, these motifs can be used to make afghans, throws and many other useful items.
This pattern will work with many needle sizes and threads/yarns as long as the fiber will block flat. Gauge and motif size will vary accordingly. #10 crochet thread and U.S. #1 needles will make a triangle about 7” long on the longest (bound-off) side.
1 ball of Aunt Lydia’s Classic size 10 crochet cotton will make many motifs. White is the traditional color for these motifs but any color that pleases the knitter will do.
