So lacy and so easy, this beautiful net-like stitch is from 1870 in Mrs. Beeton’s Guide to Embroidery, Crochet and Knitting. The pattern also looks great on both sides!
The stitch is very easy to memorize and there are only 2 rows to the pattern. There are double yarn overs in the first row and double decreases in the second. Cast on loosely since the knitting will spread out laterally.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, yarn over twice, slip 2 sts over a third stitch and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
1 yard of #10 crochet cotton thread will make 2 rows in the stated gauge with an 11-stitch width.
