This 1884 stitch pattern from The Young Ladies’ Journal, p. 58, has just 2 pattern rows with a 3-stitch repeat. I made it into an easy afghan strip that can be adjusted to any length or width. In a thicker yarn, an afghan with this airy stitch will be surprisingly warm because the eyelets trap air and keep the wearer warm and snug! The sample was blocked fairly hard to show the herringbone pattern.
The sample is 3.75 inches wide with 8 3-stitch repeats and 6 selvage stitches: 30 stitches total.

Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip purl-wise, yarn to back (ytb), knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

6 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 1” of a 30-stitch strip in the stated gauge.
