1892 Big Horseshoe
Big Horseshoe has a 13-stitch, 10-row repeat. It’s from 1892 The Art of Knitting, p.18 and its repeat is 2 rows and 3 stitches larger than Barbara G. Walker’s Horseshoe pattern in her first Treasury of Knitting Patterns, p.209. The Horseshoe pattern is obviously a perennial favorite given its good looks and ease of working: there are very few techniques needed and all wrong-side rows are purl across. It’s great for afghans, scarves, clothing, etc. The bottom edge will scallop unless a deep border of garter or rib stitch is worked before starting the Big Horseshoe pattern.
One horseshoe is 1.5 inches wide and 1 inch long at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
60 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 41-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
