This is the original 1897 Butterick edging for the Seven Sisters Motif. I rewrote the instructions in current U.S. knitting terms and modified the edge for easier sewing later.

This is a great edging for any square motif! There are never more than 20 stitches on the needle (it goes fast), it’s almost all knit stitches, the stitch count changes every other row for easy tracking and the turned corner is the most elegant knitted corner treatment I’ve seen!

Skills needed are cast-on, knit, yarn over, double yarn over, SSK (slip 1 stitch, slip the next stitch, knit the 2 slipped stitches together), knit 3 together, purl, turn work before end of row and bind-off.

One 350 ball of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 will almost make 3 edgings as shown.
