This very warm and cozy hat was inspired by the award winning earflap hat designed by Kristine Byrnes for the Seamen’s Church Institute. Kristine’s hat was inspired by one pictured in a magazine published around 1910.

Knitting the headband from side to side and then folding it in half on the slip stitch ridge before picking up stitches for the crown provides extra warmth for the ears where it is needed most. The stranded colorwork and ribbing means extra warmth as well. The clever decreases in the crown maintain the rib pattern and create a pleasing geometric accent.
