This edging requires more concentration than the average knitted edging because it has a bit of everything: attractive header, eyelet diamonds, leaves and a lacy zigzag edge. From 1902 Butterick Publishing’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, p. 88, this edging was paired with Butterick’s No. 7 “Knitted Tidy” pattern (see my “Butterick’s Tidy Triangle” for more information) but it can be used with anything. The edging starts with 32 stitches and has 18 rows – all “fancy” rows. The row stitch count varies and is noted when it changes.
The sample is 5 inches wide at its widest.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, YO twice (see note), kf&b, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, SK2P and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

11 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make one 18-row repeat in the stated gauge.
