1902 Double Apple Leaf Strip
I love leaves! This afghan strip from 1902 Butterick Publishing’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, p.18, starts with 26 stitches, increases gradually to 46 stitches, then back down to 26 stitches to begin the next repeat. I added a few extra stitches to the background to keep the leaves from distorting the edge stitches and modified the selvage stitch for easier sewing later.
There are border rows, 6 set-up rows and 20 repeating rows. The wrong side rows are mostly knit and purl stitches.
The sample is 3.75 inches wide when blocked to the stated gauge.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip, knit, purl, yarn over, kf&b, SSK, p2tog, k2tog, k3tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
100 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 10 inches in the stated gauge.
