Gay rights activist and artist, Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in 1978. It was first displayed that same year at the Pride parade in San Francisco.

Each of the shades in this eight-color flag were given specific meanings by Baker: Sex, Life, Healing, Sunlight, Nature, Magic/Art, Serenity, and Spirit.

Celebrate Pride with this shawl pattern, inspired by Gilberts joyful flag. There is also a knit version of this pattern available.
