Any yarn can be used from sock yarn up through worsted weight (I’ve worsted and DK weight). Yardage requirements will vary according to weight of yarn.
My mileage:
Worsted: 250 yds for a pair
DK weight: 300 yards for a pair
Most sock patterns call for 350 to 400 yards of sockweight yarn for a pair.
