Groot was originally a monster in one of the Marvel Monster Comics and then later, when Marvel was trying to figure out what to do with some of their D list characters, he wound up with Rocket Racoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy. As a fun aside, Rocket is actually loosely based on the Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon“.
