One of my virtual knitting groups has decided to dedicate September, 2023 to knitting with that ball of precious yarn that they’ve been “saving for something special.” I decided to design something for this informal knitalong, and, since numerous cats appear on screen during our Zoom calls, I knew I wanted to use the “Cat’s Paw” lace border pattern from The Magic of Shetland Lace Knitting by Elizabeth Lovick. (Apologies to all the dog owners in our group—I have no objection to you telling people it’s a “Puppy’s Paw” border!)

Originally designed for that small ball of gorgeous, lace-weight, luxury yarn, this pattern is adaptable to yarns of different weights and fibre contents. After all, not everyone will define “precious” the same way. Maybe it’s a ball of long-discontinued yarn from your grandmother’s stash; maybe it’s yarn you spun or dyed yourself; maybe it’s wool you bought while on vacation.

Knit on a reversible garter stitch background, instructions for two versions are included here: one more traditional version with the lace border on the gently sloped side, and one with the lace border on the long, straight side of the scarf. If you have lots of yarn, and want to make a wider scarf, there are notes to help you with that, too.
