I named this design “24 Mitten and Sock” because I casted on 24 stitches and improvised a simple little mitten and sock to celebrate the festive 24 days of December. It’s quick, fun and mindless knit perfect for relaxing days but also enjoyable even on the busiest days !

Unlike my regular patterns which are fully technical edited and test knitted, this is a free pattern which is only self-edited and self-tested by me. So you may find some or even many mistakes…

Both the mitten and sock are designed for decoration purpose and sock is not for wearing but mitten is wearable! I made a pair of kids size mitten with the thicker yarn and bigger needles and my son loves it!
You can enjoy this pattern with any yarns you like and any needle sizes you like!

I updated the pattern file to 2.0 where I added the instructions how to embroider on a finished mitten and sock. I came up with this stitch design originally for my baby romper design inspired by “Roosimine+cross stitch+kogin embroidery.

Baby kimonos don’t have the back center seam which adult size kimonos always have.
And there’s Japanese old customs to embroider small geometric pattern on the back of baby kimono to protect the baby from the evil spirits. So I came up with the idea to embroider on the back of baby romper I knitted for my friend’s baby wishing for his healthy growth. The design came from eight-point star pattern that has been a much loved symbol to Nordic mittens etc for many many years. Also known as the morning star, it’s believed to have magicai powers: protection, hope, balance and harmony…
I experimented a lot to give a new shape to this ancient pattern to fit my romper design and I love the result so much!

24日を指折り数えて心待ちにしている子供たち。街中がキラキラして日に日にワクワクしてくる季節。なにか作らずにはいられなくなって小さな飾りを作りました。心ひかれた糸で24目を針にかけたら、あとはシンプルに簡単に編めることと、可愛らしさだけを考えて作った靴下とミトン。あっというまにできちゃうので、ゆったりした気分の日にはもちろん、忙しい日々の合間にも楽しめる編み物です。
そんなわけで “24 Mitten and Sock” という名前にしましたが、クリスマスに限らず楽しめます！！！！！！！

通常は、私のパターンはテクニカル編集とテストニットをしていただいてから販売しています。この無料パターンは自分で編集とテストをしただけなので間違いが多々あるかとおもいます。お気づきのことがあれば教えていただけると嬉しいです。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

ミトンも靴下も飾るためにデザインしたものですが、ミトンは実際にミトンとして使うこともできます！もう少し太い糸と太い針を使って子供サイズのミトンを編んだら息子が気に入ってくれています！もっと細い糸と細い針でもっと小さな飾りを編むのも素敵だし、クリスマスをすぎても冬のお便りに添えてみたり…お手元にあるお好きな糸と針で楽しんでいただけたら嬉しいです！

パターンをアップデートして、刺繍の仕方を追加しました。このデザインはもともと、赤ちゃんのロンパースをデザインしていた時に考えついたもので、エストニアのRoosimineとクロスステッチとこぎん刺しと…からインスピレーションを得て考えました。

赤ちゃんの着物、産着は小さいので、大人の着物のように背中心で縫い合わせる必要がなく背中に縫い目がありません。縫い目に守られていない背中から邪気が入ることがないように、という願いを込めて産着の背中に小さな刺繍をする習わし「背守り刺繍」のことを知って、友人の出産祝いに編んだロンパースにも、健やかな成長の願いをこめて刺繍をしようと考えました。日本古来の麻の葉模様をはじめ、いろんな模様をあれこれ試して、一番ぴったりだったのが、ラトビアのミトンなどに古くから伝わるエイトポイントスターの模様でした。モーニングスターとも呼ばれるこの模様は夜の闇を退け、新しい朝の訪れを伝える明けの明星を表していて、その光は悪きものから身を守る力があると考えられているそう。
その模様を、限られた目数に合うようにさらにぎゅっと凝縮させて…どこか懐かしくて、でも新鮮なお気に入りの模様になりました♡
