A classic 2x2 ribbed beanie pattern!

Not to go too cooking recipe SEO with this, but I’ve always lived in places cold enough to justify putting some real time in warmer knits. Doubling the fabric increases the wind resistance—or at least that’s my working theory here.

Knit this classic ribbed hat in sportweight wool! This pattern works crown to crown, and can be stopped in the middle if you want a more basic knit hat.

Materials:

  • 400 yards sportweight wool (o-wool 2-ply classic, a discontinued yarn, is listed as fingering weight, but works up heavier for me)
  • 1 set of 5 DPNs in US3-4/3.25-3.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • 1 16” circular needle in size needed for gauge
  • 4 removable stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Gauge is 24 sts and 30 rows over 4”/10cm of lightly blocked 2x2 knit-purl ribbing, worked in the round and measured under no tension. Please be sure to check your gauge.
