Sam’s Gaffer lives at Number 3 Bagshot Row, which is just below Bag End, along with several other older gossipy hobbits, gardening and drinking beer. These socks were designed with the Gaffer’s garden in mind, full of potatoes and other roots, and the rows and rows of other vegetation.
Skill Level: Intermediate— the knitting isn’t difficult, but there are a few unusual stitches and some complicated gusset instructions
Materials: Approx. 320-370 yds / 300-340 m of sock yarn in a solid or semi-solid color. The socks pictured used 360 yds /330 m of Barking Dog Yarns’ Achilles in the colorway “Rye”
Tools: Measuring tape, tapestry needle, scissors
Needles: US1/2.25mm sock needles (the pattern is written for DPNs, but magic loop knitters can use stitch markers to adapt.
Gauge: 8 stitches & 12 rounds per inch/2.5cm in stockinette
Sizing: Small (Large) size measures approx. 8 inches /20.5cm (9inches/23cm) in circumference. Leg height, ankle, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
