The pattern is based on a block but it can be made bigger into a blanket as long as you follow the rules of the block.
You can use any yarn and the right size hook and be able to do the following stitches (American terms)
Ch – chain
Sl/st – slip stitch
Dc – double crochet
Fpdc – front post double crochet
Bptc - back post triple crochet
