ABOUT DESIGN AND PATTERN
The linda darnell scarf is an excellent way to perfect your Fair Isle technique on straight needles. Fair Isle is traditionally worked on a circular needle in the round; this scarf is worked on straight needles and woven along the long edge.
Because the circumference of the scarf is only 12 inches-(30.5 cm) around, a 16 inch-(40.5 cm) circular needle will be too long and a 12 inch-(30.5 cm) circular needle will be too uncomfortable.
If you prefer, with a few adjustments for pattern repeats, the scarf can be worked in the round, using a set of double pointed needles.
There are some patterns in the scarf that are not Fair Isle.
Very little clean-up is required with this scarf because all the ends are in the center of tube.
A very helpful tracking sheet is included with pattern.
SIZE
62 inches-(157 cm) x 6 inches-(15.25 cm)
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
approximately 62 inches-(157.5 cm) long x width varies from 5.5 inches-(14 cm) to 6 inches-(15.25 cm)
YARN USED FOR SAMPLE
Plymouth Yarn’s Baby Alpaca DK
100% baby alpaca
50 grams—125 yards each
13 balls were used
1 ball each of 11 colors
2 balls of ecru (color C)
Any soft dk weight yarn can be substituted. The chart below makes it easy to check your stash. The scarf looks attractive in many different color combinations. More or less colors can be used. It would be a completely different look using only 2 colors. A total of 7 balls would be required for a two color scarf; 4 of the dominant color and 3 of the second color.
Each row of color requires approximately 1½ yards-(47m) of yarn. We figured the same 1½ yards-(47m), even when 2 colors were used on the same row.
For scarf to be the correct size, it is not the brand of yarn that matters, but the GAUGE that is important.
It is best to refer to the yardage to determine how many skeins or balls to purchase.
