18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm, 4in over stocking stitch using 5mm knitting needles and 22sts and 28 rows to 10cm, 4in, over st-st using 4mm needles or the size required to give the correct tension. Check your tension – if less stitches use thinner needles if more use thicker needles.

If preferred 3.25mm (UK10 – US3), 4mm (UK8-US6) and 5mm (UK6-US8) 100cm circular knitting needles can be used.
