This is a fast, easy kippah that you can knit in Fingering or DK weight yarn. The finished diameter is about 5”, but you can make it larger or smaller in multiples of 3 stitches. Gauge is not important. The number of stitches remaining on the needle when stopping the German Short Rows (GSR) is ⅓ of the number of cast on stitches.The pattern works for Fingering yarn with 24 stitches, or DK yarn with 21 stitches to create the 5” diameter kippah. The pattern below is for Fingering yarn and ( DK yarn ) in the parentheses.

Materials Needed:
Your choice of fingering (or DK ) yarn
US #2 needles for Fingering- (US# 2.5 for DK)
Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

GSR: German Short Row. Knit until instructed, turn your work and slip the last knitted stitch purl-wise with the yarn in front back to the Right hand needle. Pull the working yarn back over the right hand needle- this creates a GSR double stitch- and then knit as usual. When you are knitting the GSR double stitches you knit it as one stitch.

Sl1: Slip one stitch knit wise with yarn in back or purlwise with the yarn in front or back. Your choice. Just be consistent for the entire project, as this creates your outer edge.

K : Knit

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 24 (21) Stitches using Cable Cast on.

Row 1: Sl1, K until there is 1 stitch on LH needle. TURN- GSR and K back.
Row 2: Sl1, K until you reach the prior GSR . TURN- GSR and K back.

Repeat Row 2 until there are 8 (7) stitches left BEFORE the first GSR double stitch.

Row 3: Sl1, K to end ( knitting all the GSR double stitches as 1 stitch) and K back. 24 (21) stitches.

You have completed 1 wedge. Repeat these 3 rows until you have 6 wedges. On the FINAL WEDGE don’t knit back after knitting all the GSR stitches. Instead bind off using your preferred bind off. Cut the yarn, leaving a 10-12 ” tail.
Using a tapestry needle, use this yarn to mattress stitch (from the side you have chosen as your right side) the cast on and bind off edges together. You will mattress stitch from the outer edge to the center. Finally, using the tapestry needle, thread the tail from the cast on and use it to cinch the center of the 6 wedges together. Weave in ends, block and enjoy!
