This cowl is a tribute to one of my all-time favorite books, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith. The story of growing up and overcoming diversity has been a touchstone for me at many times in my life. The harsh girders in the borders of the cowl give way to the leaves of new life and promises of the future. A simple knit with an easy-to-memorize leaf pattern, it can adapt to any size you want. It’s the perfect accessory to layer over a t-shirt in the spring or to bundle up under your coat in the Fall and Winter.

Special Techniques:

• i-cord cast on and bind off
• lace sts with yo, k2tog, ssk, and cdd
• latvian braid
• right and left-leaning twisted sts
• work in the round on circular needles
• change colors and work with two colors at once
• graft live stitches together using kitchener stitch

Needle: US 4/3.5 mm 16” circular needle and two US 4/3.5 mm DPNs for grafting.

Yarns: You will want a smooth, fingering weight yarn in two colors without much color variation. For the border, you’ll want a lighter color to show the twisted stitches. For the sample, I used Cloudborn Highland Superwash Sock Twist in Citrus Green and Shaela Heather.

Yardage: For the border (color A) - 1 skein (50 g/178 yds) fingering weight yarn. For the leaves (color B) - 2 skeins (100 g/356 yds) fingering weight yarn.

Gauge: 23 sts x 28 rnds = 4” in stockinette worked in the round, after blocking.

Notions: Stitch markers and tapestry needle.

Sizes: This pattern is written for one size. If you want to change the circumference of the cowl, cast on in a multiple of 16 sts. The height of the cowl can be adjusted by adding more repeats of the borders or the leaf pattern.
