A flutter of butterflies
Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) are some of the most conspicuous and colorful creatures found in nature. If you ever considered memorizing all butterfly species, you’ve got your work cut out for you, as there are over 20.000 species!
Three of these you can get to know a bit better through this pattern.
Included in this pattern are the European peacock, mountain Apollo, red admiral and the common mallow. Each butterfly is a small project to be finished in an evening or so. These butterflies can be attached to just about anything, as an embellishment. Or, start your own butterfly collection (lepidopterarium).
These butterflies measure 5, 6 and 7.5 cm and were knitted on 1.25 mm double pointed needles in a lace-gauged yarn. They can be done in a heavier yarn and will turn out slightly larger. For the antennae you’ll need some threads of sewing yarn and some hair spray or hair gel.
Only small amounts of yarns are needed, so a butterfly is a great project to use up any scraps you have lying around. This easy, fun and fast flat knit asks for some intarsia color work and knitting stripes.
So, have an uplifting, (butter)fly time creating the flamboyant flyers in this pattern! Viv
