A Hat on Straight Needles: Seersucker
NOTE: (01/01/2021) THIS PATTERN HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETELY CORRECTED OF ALL ERRORS.** There were some mistakes in the shaping of the top of the hat- they have now been written correctly. I am very sorry that this caused issues for so many people. Thank you very much for choosing to knit this pattern- I am so grateful, and amazed that so many people have found and enjoyed this pattern. Hopefully now you’ll enjoy finishing it!
NOTE: (17/02/2020) This pattern used to be on a different website, and had a different and shorter band. However I have now updated this pattern to have a long and folded 2x2 rib band, as well as correcting any errors there were in the original pattern. Other than that, the pattern is exactly the same as it was!*
This hat is so fun, fast, and easy to knit. All you need to know how to do is knit and purl, cast on and sew up. And that’s it!
It’s knitted flat, which means there’s a seam that runs up the back. However, if you do it with patience and care, it’s really not a noticeable feature.
The body is knitted in Seersucker stitch, which gives a diamond effect, and is made up of knit and purl stitches- it’s so simple, but gives such a wonderful texture and cozy quilted effect.
I’ve designed this hat to have a long band knitted in 2x2 rib that folds over. This is for a few reasons: it gives a double layer of warmth to the hat; it gives a very neat and professional look (not that I really care about that!); and, crucially, it gives a perfect fit to the hat, and prevents it from going saggy over time and stretching out of shape (for more tips on this, read the Tips and Notes below).
