A Hope and a Prayer Shawlette
Breast Cancer remains the number one cancer in women, no matter your age or ethnicity, despite much research and testing. Almost everyone knows someone who has had Breast Cancer, or has even had it themselves. I myself am a 6 year survivor of Triple Negative Breast Cancer, and, unfortunately, recently received the news that I have it once again, this time in the other breast, even though all the known genetic testing for genetic predisposition to it had come back negative. There is still much that remains unknown about this disease, however there is always hope. Much progress has been made and women are now living many years with this disease as a chronic, treatable one. This shawlette design evolved out of what I am currently going through. It is a crescent-shaped shawlette knit from the bottom up. It begins with an Estonian Arches and Mesh Lace Border that represents churches filled with believers. It then graduates into a short row cable section symbolic of the prayers for Breast Cancer patients being offered and rising upwards. I worked this shawlette in Malabrigo’s Silky Merino Yarn in the Plum Blossom shade, which is a soft silk and Merino Wool blend. It is DK in weight, and it took me 4 skeins (150 yards per skein) to make it. Finished, the shawlette is a few inches shy of 6 feet, and is 20 inches wide at its deepest center point. Full written directions and charts are included in the pattern.
