As English mansions and castles replaced gas lighting and candles with electricity during the early years of the 1900s, decorative lamps were everywhere. The lampshades for the new accessories upstairs were elaborate, embellished with fringe, beads, and lace. Colors ranged from light natural, mauve, and peach to dark reds and burgundies. Floor lamps, as well as table, bedside, and desk lamps all were used. Lamps downstairs were simpler and smaller. Much to the distress of the servants and cooks, electric lights were installed in the kitchen.

This lampshade is knitted in the round, beginning at the top and increasing gradually to the bottom. The yarn used is a medium weight cotton available in many colors. Beaded fringe adds a dramatic touch.
