A Lane For Everyone…
On a recent trip to Copenhagen, I was struck by the smooth flow of traffic in spite of so many pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles all sharing the roads. And after a couple of days of getting our bearings and learning the rules of the road… we rented bicycles so we could really zip around the city. It works because there is a lane for everyone, and everyone stays in their lane. (Most of the time… I’m certain we visitors probably violate this more than we should… out of ignorance not malice!)
When I travel, yarn is a favorite souvenir and I picked up two 50g skeins of Danish wool fingering weight… and created a beret with them. Simple alternating of the colors creates a striking effect that reminded me of all the lanes.
The low contrast grey version is my Danish yarn. The steel blue and grey is in my hand dyed 100% British BFL fingering, and the red and white (had to honor the Danish Flag!) is in my hand dyed 85% extra fine merino fingering.
The pattern has stitch counts for two sizes… I have a large head (23”) and wear the larger size, but really, blocking method will determine size more than needles.
I block my berets over a large dinner plate - because I want the hat to balance with my big head and big hair. It does stretch the band a bit, and the Danish yarn version didn’t “bounce back” as much, so I added a simple pleat and a couple of buttons. A charming design feature!
