What is it about diagonal double garter knitting that captures the eye, and the imagination? Is it the fact that it looks like it’s doing the impossible? Throw variegated yarn into the mix, and it’s even more magical.

This reversible pattern combines these two elements: diagonal knitting and variegated yarn, with an added dash of EASY just to speed things along. It’s all done in garter stitch, but the increases and decreases involve just enough thought to keep it from turning into the dreaded garter stitch slog. And the variegated yarn gives an extra spice to the pattern, as you take the time to be wowed by the way the changing colours light up the scarf right before your eyes.

The easy part is an added bonus. People who have never done diagonal knitting will take one look at your scarf and will invariably comment: “That looks so hard.” You will
answer: “No, it’s really easy.” and then you will inwardly smile because you know they’re thinking you’re being unduly modest, whereas you’re just stating a fact: it IS really easy.

We almost said, “foolproof”, but we tend not to use that word after hearing the old expression: “Nothing is foolproof to a really dedicated fool.” So let’s just say the chances of screwing up this pattern are very slim. There are really only a few simple things you have to keep in mind:
-Each row is done in a different colour of yarn. If you’ve just finished a row of plain yarn, you know the next one has to be variegated, and vice versa (didn’t we say it was easy?)
