When writing the Max Medina proposal scene for the finale of Season 1 of Gilmore Girls, creator and writer Amy Sherman-Palladino put a lot of thought into which flower they would use. She said, “It wouldn’t be roses. Daisies are such a hardy, everyday-Joe kind of flower, a flower you can really get behind. A blue-collar flower. We didn’t want it to be daffodils, or something sort of wispy and too Jane Austen-y. We wanted it to be something really real. I think we wiped out yellow daisies on the West Coast.” Despite 1,000 yellow daisies sounding like a lot of flowers, they didn’t have the visual impact needed on-screen. Production designer Sandy Veneziano said, “We cheated a little bit on some of the shots. We would push the background daisies—if it wasn’t a wide shot—further in and put some on apple boxes so they were a little higher and filled the space.” While the final count is unknown, faux daisies were added as filler, and flowers rearranged for every camera angle to maximize visual impact.

Worked the long way in the round, this large circumference cowl features sections of the daisy stitch flanked by 4-stitch cabled columns and sections of reverse stockinette. Created by wrapping the yarn twice around the needle for multiple stitches, then dropping the extra wraps on the following round, the daisy stitch is a beautiful and unique way to symbolize Lorelai and Max’s relationship. Information on how to increase or decrease the circumference is added in the instructions if you prefer a closer or looser fit.
