Cottage Creations’ Wonderful Wallaby, its most popular pattern, was first published in 1984, thirty-six years ago. Over the years thousands of knitters reported they’ve knit not just one Wallaby, but many. They’ve tweaked the pattern using their creativity and have often shared photos on Ravelry or Pinterest.

Like others, I’ve knit many Wallaby’s over the years for friends and family. In so doing I’ve made innovations and incorporated shared techniques. I’ve realized the necessity for more diagrams. Because of the additions, it became necessary to divide this “new generation” into two separate booklets—one for kids (sizes 2-12), the other for grown-ups (5 sizes)

Wallaby Pouch with I-Cord edging

(Alternative methods of picking up sts and “installing a lifeline” are found on page 18, under Techniques.) Lay sweater on flat surface, right side up, with M’s at each side, ribbing closest to you. Count in 4 (4, 6, 9, 11, 13) sts from right side (as sweater is worn), mark st with safety pin in second row above ribbing. Count in the same number of sts from left side marker, mark st with safety pin in second row above ribbing. With a second skein of yarn, insert crochet hook from inside of sweater to point of right safety pin, hook new yarn and draw across to center of st next to the left side safety pin. See Diagram 3. From outside of sweater, pick up and K1 in each st across until you reach the point where you initially drew yarn through. (Using a crochet hook enables you to pick up sts easily. Then, as hook fills, slip sts off purlwise, one at a time to pouch needle.) Continue across until you’ve picked up
70 (74, 78, 82, 86, 90) sts. See Diagram 4.
