Aabits
Aabits is the first book given to a kid on their first day in school in Estonia. Aabits is an alphabet book specifically designed to teach a child to read.
The Aabits pattern contains all letters of the alphabet and some small embellishments. The use of the mosaic alphabet is limitless. Knit a square and use it as a washcloth or spa cloth. Or combine the elements to create an alphabet blanket for a baby, make a scarf with a slogan, or add initials to a tea towel…

Any yarn weight and corresponding needle size can be used. Make one square as a swatch to determine the right needle size, and yarn usage needed.
The sample square was made in sport / 5 ply weight yarn
(50 g / 1.76 oz = 159 m / 174 yards), on 3 mm / US 2½ needles.
The size of the sample is 14 x 14 cm / 5½ x 5½”.
The gauge was 28 stitches x 53 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in a mosaic pattern. Gauge is not crucial to this project but will affect the size and the amount of yarn used.
Approximate amounts of sport weight yarn for one square:
MC and CC 7 g / 0.25 oz = 22 m / 24 yards of each colour.
