Aagje is a character from the children’s book Pluk van de Petteflet (translated in English as Tow-Truck Pluck). The book is written by Annie M.G. Schmidt (1911-1995), one of my favorite children’s book writers of all time (Jip and Janneke - in the UK edition translated as Bob and Jilly) is her most famous book, and even nowadays this is probably the most read bedtime book for preschoolers in The Netherlands). Annie M.G. Schmidt is also referred to as ‘the Roald Dahl of The Netherlands.

Aagje is a cheerful, playful and colourful character who loves to go on little adventures with Pluk. When I was knitting these socks, my son said, ‘those are real Aagje socks!’ He referred to the children’s book character, as well as to his little sister: we named our youngest after Pluk’s Aagje. And she happens to be cheerful, playful and colourful too!

I hope you have lots of fun, playing around with colours while knitting these socks. Notes:

• This pattern is for a top-down (partially) colourwork sock, with a heel flap and gusset, knit using the magic loop method of knitting in the round. If you find it easier, you can knit the colourwork part on a 23 cm circular needle.
• For the colourwork part of the sock I advise to use a larger needle. Colourwork will knit up tighter than the stockinette part.
• When using a larger needle (0.5 mm or 0.75 mm bigger, because larger will make the colourwork too lose) doesn’t do the trick, this video will give you more tips to make your colourwork sock fit: https://youtu.be/ByRqi3v9GoI?si=FMHUhr05huKBjTrP

Yarn:
Sample used:

• Durable Soqs, Mimosa (411), 50 grams (210 meters), 75% wool, 25% nylon (as the main colour).
• Durable Soqs, Fresia (239), 50 grams (210 meters) 75% wool, 25% nylon (as contrasting colour 1)
• Durable Soqs, Antique Pink (227), 50 grams (210 meters), 75% wool, 25% nylon (as contrasting colour 2).

Any fingering weight sock yarn will do.
The largest size will use up more yarn than the smaller sizes. 150 grams in total is more than enough yarn for knitting these socks in the largest size (size Large, European shoe size 49). If you want to use leftover yarns: 30 grams for the main colour and 40 grams for both contrasting colours 1 and 2 will be enough for the largest size.

Needles:
- 2.25 mm and 2.75 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 80 or 100 cm circular needle for knitting magic loop
Or use your preferred method of knitting colourwork in the round. Some people prefer knitting the colourwork part on a 23 cm circular needle (largest size).

Notions:

• 2 stitch markers (closed, matching your needle size)
• opening coloured stitch markers / progress keepers when you want to keep track of your rounds
• tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
• wool wash for washing & blocking
• sock blockers for blocking (optional)
• sock ruler (optional)

Gauge:
32 sts x 48 rnds in stockinette stitch (knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm
32 sts x 40 rnds in colourwork pattern (knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm

Sizes:
Pattern is written for: kids, (small, medium, large)
European shoe size: 27-32 (33-37, 38-42, 43-49)
Foot circumference: 16-19 (20-22, 23-25, 26-28) cm
