AB 05 22 shawlette
ABOUT
I initially created this shawlette for the TRIA LAB, a workshop series to explore triangular shawl shapes.
The idea of the TRIA LAB is to learn several basic triangular constructions and take a deep dive into the possibilities of improving them.
I was missing an example for an advanced triangular sideways construction. At the same time, spring was in the air,
I chose sage as my color of the year and already had a
collection with Lamana’s beautiful yarn in the double broken rib stitch pattern in place. One thing led to the other and this sweet shawlette was born.
CONSTRUCTION
The sideways shawlette is worked from the left to the right tip, first with increases to maximum height and then with faster decreases to the end. While the asymmetric appearance is unusual for this construction it is fun to wear and shows the tips as a cheeky detail on your shoulder.

YARN
This shawlette is knit with 2 strands of yarn held together. The MC is Como and the CC is Premia, both yarns are from Lamana.
Como from Lamana is a superfine merino yarn. I believe it is sport weight, but the yarn company comes from my home country – Germany, and here we don’t use yarn weights as a category. Unfortunately, that leads to indistinct translations.
Premia from Lamana is a classic silk/mohair lace yarn. I believe you can knit this shawlette in a wide range of yarn weights, after all a shawlette is neither a garment that needs to fit on your body nor is it an accessory with this requirement. In fact, I would love to inspire you to try lots of different things with my pattern. I designed this pattern to play with it.
However, if you want to end up with my measurements you can either use fingering or a sport weight yarn and match it with lace weight. Or you can knit this shawlette with DK yarn only. As long as you hit gauge you are good to go.
Generally, I don’t believe that there are any special requirements regarding fiber. So, just choose what you like and feels good for you.
SKILL LEVEL
Generally, my patterns are written for adventurous beginner and seasoned comfort-seeking knitters.
As an adventurous beginner knitter, you get to learn some new skills on a fun project.
Starting first with a very small and quick long-tail cast-on and the garter stitch will give you an easy entry.
This might be the first time, you work that kind of slip stitch border, but I can promise you – it is awesome and tends to look much better than the 1 slip stitch.
The pattern continues in the garter rib stitch, which is more knits than purls. Additionally, you get to make some classic increases and decreases.
There are interactive video links to all these techniques, so help is always just one click away!
Please believe me, I have been in your shoes not that long ago and I do remember those first stitches. Whenever I write my patterns, you are on my mind and I give my very best to hold your hands and guide you all the way to the finishing round.
For seasoned comfort-seeking knitters this is an easy fun knit that won’t bore you – promised! For you, I included charts in this pattern, which gives you the possibility to thrive even more with this project. If you like to alternate your patterns, this one is really perfect for you as there are lots of possibilities to play with it and I really want to invite you to do so.
As a long-time knitter, you know the difference between a pattern that has been tech edited and test knitted – and one that hasn’t. As you like to knit from quality patterns, please let me assure you that this one has gone through both thoroughly.
I might not have your years of experience, but I am totally obsessed with knitting. I know, that after reaching a certain level, you want to be able to skip several parts of a pattern and get straight to the cast-on. That’s why I keep the instructions always separated from everything else and make sure they are easy to read and can be printed in black & white. Sounds good, right!?
This shawlette is part of the Sci-Fi Fam collection, which is made for all ages and genders. There are now several hats, a bonnet, a cowl and mittens. I might add some more… Please have a look at the other designs, too.
