This backpack was created as a freestyle knit that I really enjoyed and decided to write down the pattern for. I knitted the first prototype using the same yarn (2x Line from Sandnes Garn) as in my Linnie bag and made a second version using 4 strands of fingering/lace yarn. It worked really well using this yarn combination as well.

Yarn suggestion for this backpack is 2 strands of DK yarn, or different yarns that makes a similar gauge and a dense fabric. Line from Sandnes Garn is categorized as a light worsted, but the gauge in this pattern is knitted as a DK. When you are knitting something like this backpack the gauge is not super important, it is more important that the fabric is dense.

I did not create a lining for this backpack because of its size really. It cannot contain as much items as the Linne Bag and it will not be weighted down in the same way.

The techniques you need to know is as follows:

  • Long tail cast on
  • Double knitting back and forth
  • Regular bind off
  • Knit up stitches
  • Make holes in double knitting
  • Make an icord
  • Knit stitches together and do a bind off at the same time using a support needle
  • Italian bind off
  • Decrease right and left double knitting (if you want to round off the lid before bind off)
  • Fasten buttons

Double knitting can be a bit hard on the hands, but the result is really nice when both sides are supposed to be identical. I linked to a video in the pattern that I made to show the difference between double knitting and knitting in the round.

If you choose to knit in the round instead for doing the double knitting, I recommend using Judys Magic cast on for the bottom, and when picking up stitches see what the total number of stitches is after the 2 set up needles and add one stitch so it adds up in pairs. The gauge might also be a bit different when knitting stockinette in the round.

If you have any comments to this pattern, please let me know. I am adjusting and learning all the time and appreciates feedback.

Happy knitting!
