This shawl is first worked from bottom to top and then from side to side to attach the edging. It works by creating the base and then knitting along the edge of the base. Base stitches are kept live, so there’s no need to pick up stitches.

Links to tutorials are included for the less common stitches, which are ptbl, p2tbl and smocked, or wrapped, stitches.

In case you’re wondering about the name, it’s a reference to a Terry Pratchett book, Monstrous Regiment. In the book is a was a god named Nuggan who considered numerous things abominations, including children, the color blue, ears and crop rotation.

The shawl has a LOT of left leaning purl increases, which are fairly fiddly. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I hadn’t messed up majorly the first go round, requiring me to redo the lace bit. By the end, I determined that left leaning purl decreases were an Abomination unto Nuggan.

If you feel the need to skip the left leaning purl decreases and go with all p2togs, I won’t judge. Though Nuggan might.
