Up above the treeline, where the landscape is unbroken by branch or bough, the ground is carpeted in a riot of colour. Small delicate flowers add texture, sweet scent, and a kaleidoscope of hues that brighten the endless daylight of arctic summers.
Above The Treeline Hat uses garter stitch stripes and braided slipped stitches to evoke the tiny bright flowers that punctuate the summer tundra. It is a light weight and loose fitted cap perfect for cool evenings in late spring or early autumn in more southerly climates. With such a forgiving fit and small yardage, this hat is an excellent choice for gifting.
Materials Needed:
- 120/130 yards fingering weight yarn in main colour
- 60/65 yards fingering weight yarn in contrast colour
- 3mm (US 2½) circular or dpn needles or size needed for gauge
- 2.75mm (US 2) circular or dpn needles or one size smaller than needle for gauge
- stitch marker to mark start/end of round
- 9/10 additional stitch markers to mark repeats (optional)
- 2 cable needles (optional but strongly recommended)
Gauge: 26 stitches by 34 rows over 4”/10cm
Note that it is tricky to measure row gauge in particular in this piece, as the mixed gauges of stocking stitch, garter stitch, and slipped stitches tend to pull the fabric around unexpectedly. I recommend gently pinning the fabric flat before measuring.
Sizes:
S/M length @9.75”, circumference @20”
M/L length @9.75”, circumference @22”
