Absorbent Washcloths
Introduction
Absorbent washcloths are essential tools for regular personal care and household tasks. This particular design quickly soaks up liquids, making these washcloths ideal for drying your hands, mopping up spills in the kitchen or when bathing or showering. The secret to their super absorbency is the mini bean stitch, which creates a soft and thick fabric that’s pleasant to use. As a one-ball project, this pattern is suitable for beginners and also makes a great stash buster for more experienced knitters.
Materials List
- 160m/175y or 50gr/1.8oz of fingering cotton. I used 1 ball of Søstrene Grene’s Anna & Clara Bomuldsgarn per washcloth.
- 4mm hook (G-6 US) (8 UK), 4.5mm hook (7 US/UK)
- Stitch markers (optional)
- Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Notes
This pattern uses the mini bean stitch (also known as Elizabethan stitch), which is a variation on the single crochet. For a tutorial, see: https://youtu.be/k73aBqjne8Q

I recommend you read through the pattern completely before beginning, just to make sure you understand everything.
Gauge
Exact gauge isn’t crucial but will affect the final size of the washcloth. A gauge of 11 mini bean stitches and 20 rows for a 10x10cm/4x4” swatch results in a finished washcloth that measures 24x24cm or 9.5x9.5”.
Sizes
This pattern is written for a medium-sized square washcloth, but can easily be adapted to create larger cloths and/or rectangular cloths by adding more stitches and/or rows. When adding stitches, make sure you always add a multiple of 2.
